You can start earning money straight away, but realistically its going to take a few months to achieve a good income, depending on which income streams you’re using. It can take a few years to build up a full time income. Remember, you need to write high quality content and build a relationship with your readers, which takes time. Additionally, there’s content promotion and growing your social channels to think about too.

How to make money blogging
Let’s take a look at the varying income streams you can use to earn cash:
- Affiliate marketing
- Display advertising
- Sponsored content
- Selling products
- Selling services
One of the most popular ways to make money blogging is via affiliate marketing. This is when you use links or adverts which readers can click and make a purchase through. If a reader buys a product/service via your affiliate link, you earn a small commission. Obviously, having more traffic will put more eyes in front of your links and help you to potentially earn more money. However, you don’t need a certain amount of traffic to start using affiliate links. Whats more, is that you can also use affiliate links on social media too!
To use affiliate links, its best to sign up to an affiliate network. This is a platform where you can use and track your links from several companies under one roof.
It’s a great way to generate passive income, but more traffic will help you to earn more money.
Display ads are the visual adverts you see on a website. They can be text, image, audio or video. One of the most used networks for displaying ads on your website is Google Adsense. I’ve earned around £120 with this platform which isn’t much in the grand scheme of things. Adsense is ideal if you want to supplement your income with little work. Again, more views means better earnings. Alternative to Adsense are MediaNet and MediaVine (you need to be gaining 25,000 sessions per month to apply).
Sponsored blogs, sponsored giveaways, media posts and brand work are all considered high income streams as you can give exposure to the brands you are working with. Sponsored content tends to depend on your overall stats and domain authority which can take time to grow. Creating high quality content and working on promoting your blog posts is the key to getting sponsored content.
How much to charge for sponsored posts?
This is always tricky as there’s no standard rate fee. I’ve made £50 to £70 (which works out to approx. $70 to $100) for sponsored blog posts, however, the amount you charge will ultimately depend on your blog views, unique users, number of subscribers and domain authority score. You can find sponsored content opportunities through Bloglovin Activate, Awin’s opportunity marketplace and Facebook. Additionally, you can pitch to brands directly.
Selling your own products
Selling your own products basically gives you the freedom of choice to sell something that you believe in and trust! These are the best items to make income from because you have full control over what you’re selling.
A few examples of things you can sell are:
- Digital downloads
- Physical products – clothes, jewellery, homewares etc
These are just a few of many, but you can use your imagination! There is a market for anything and everything!
Physical items are likely to be more time-consuming as you need to pack and ship your products, whereas digital downloads can be downloaded by the buyer.
Places where you can sell your items:
- WooCommerce (used for WordPress blogs)
- Squarespace e-commerce
- Big Cartel (open your own online store)
Selling services is a great way to make money. I’ve been a freelance writer for the past four years and it all started from blogging. I’m proof that you can make a career from writing, even with zero experience.
There’s no limit to the money you can earn via selling your services.
Here are a few services you can provide;
- Freelance via writing, editing and proofreading
- Design based services – web pages, coding and branding
- Blog training / mentor / coaching
- Webinars (paid)
- Virtual online workshops
Selling your services can be a way to make extra cash as a side hustle, or you may wish to start a career. If you’re looking for a way to make extra money, using sites like Fiverr to sell your offerings can work well. You can also advertise your services via your blog and on social media.
If you’re serious about making a career from your services, especially freelance writing, check out my guides for beginners. I work with clients from all over the world and have made thousands. Make money blogging without selling your soul
Making money blogging and building a regular income doesn’t need to feel shady or sleezy. It’s important to be authentic with your audience and disclose affiliate links and sponsored content. Remember, you also need to declare any earnings from your website – If you’re in the UK, you can do this online via HMRC.
Before you start making money, consider which income streams you’d like to implement. It’s often easiest to start with affiliate marketing and display ads as you can use these even if your blog is brand new.
